Lauren found this nasty old baby doll washed up on the beach. Turned out to be a good luck Voodoo doll. |
I have been absent from my blog over the past two weeks. Two weeks ago I flew back to the states to attend my daughters high school graduation. There are things that we miss out on as a traveling sport fish crew, but there are things that one just does not miss out on. This was one of them. I was so proud to sit there in the stands and watch as Lauren walked for her Diploma. I sat there in the bleachers and it was a surreal moment. As she walked to the stage and her name was called I flashed back to all the years of a clumsy little girl to a blosoming teen. I saw my baby girl become an adult. It was as if the entire graduation ceremony was in her honor. Im very proud of her. Now she heads off to FSU in a few weeks to start college
After the graduation and a few days stateside, I flew back to San Sal, Bahamas. One of the things that I love most about my boss is that he is so giving. He had another event to attend so he flew the family down with me. Unfortunately my son could not make it, so Lauren brought her best friend Allie in his place. It was not the same with out Patrick there, But he has made many trips with me and will have other chances. It was a great week. Lauren graduated, flew to the Bahamas, Explored an island, Turned 18 ( drinking age here), Had a beer at a bar with her parents ( weird), learned to drive on the wrong side of a car and on the wrong side of the road, Got to do a dive on the wall near the marina, swam with sharks and caught her first blue marlin. not a bad for the first week after graduating.
The docks are full here in Riding Rock Marina. The boats are all catching Blue marlin and a few dorado each day. One blue marlin stands out though. We went fishing one day and and caught a nice big blue. My daughter her friends all three tag teamed a big blue marlin for an hour+ to get their first ever release. It was an epic battle. At first when the Blue came crashing out of the water I thought damn why did it have to be such a big one, but the blue heaven girls team slugged it out and eventually caught the fish. It was a great first blue for all of them. It is tradition to fly a release flag when one catches a marlin. I wanted to do something special for the girls first Blue. So I had them each bring me a bikini top . I tied three bikini tops together and attached them to the release flag we flew that day from our outrigger. It was the talk of the dock. A number of other anglers and crew came by and had to have a picture of that.
The past week flew by, each day filled with driving to empty beaches, snorkeling and paddle boarding, and fishing.
I wish it had not gone by so fast. One problem that we did have was that the second day they were here, I pinched something in my lower back while taking out the garbage. It laid me out. I will give credit to the local clinic on the island. I made a visit there for muscle relaxers and some pain meds. The clinic was nicely appointed and cheap. The meds made the pain tolerable so that I could continue enjoying the week.
The weather here has been outstanding. The seas have calmed and the skies sunny. The problem that comes with no wind is mosquitoes. When the wind dies out, the evenings can be brutal. The mosquitoes here are large and fierce. I actually witnessed one mosquito tackle a seagull. It then skinned the seagull and used its skin as a disguise to sneak in for more blood extractions. All small dogs must be kept on a short leash as well. If not the Mosquitoes will gang up and fly away with it.
