Rum Cay is about 25 miles south of San Sal. Rum Cay use to be a happening little marina years back. Unfortunately a few hurricanes filled in the entrance to the marina at Sumner point marina and destroyed the dock. On top of that there is some outstanding litigation that has kept the marina close for the last year. We fished our way to Rum and had a few Tuna bites but only caught one nice 50 lb Yellowfin tuna. Late in the day we did have a nice blue marlin come crashing into the spread. But after pouncing on three different lures, It shook the third hook and left.
I spoke to a boat that was fishing there in Rum that had actually tied up at the marina the night before while we were fishing. He informed me that the draft into the marina had been improved and that he had spent the night tied up there. So with my butt puckered I followed the old buoys into rum. Yes it is still well marked and all the buoys are still in place. We went in at max full moon low tide . We slowly made our way across the shallows and never saw less that 1.8 feet under the keel. for those of you that have been before to rum, The last turn is shallow to the right side. I tied up at one of the long docks at the beginning of the marina. The other boat I spoke to was all the way inside. The docks are in a poor state of repair. Many pilings are broken from the hurricanes and the docks are leaning a bit in places. There is no water or power. Bobby Little came out to meet the boat and told us there is no charge for dockage till the marina is back up and going. He thinks he should start repairs by fall. I can safely say that if any boat drawing 6 foot or less wanted to stop there for a night , You are perfectly safe in doing so. The shark wrangling is still epic at Sumner point marina. Each afternoon the sharks filter into the marina and wait for meals. The second you drop a piece of fish into the water the sharks are in a frenzy. We attached a rope to the tuna head after we filleted it and threw it in the water. The goal of shark wrangling is to have the shark bite onto the fish head and then you try to lift the sharks head out of the water before it lets go. Its crazy.
The next day, we fished our way north and back to San Sal. The marlin were non existent. so we did some deep dropping. We did real well on yellow eye snappers till the sharks moved in on us and they started eating us up.
Today we are going to snorkel and dive a bit. Then back at the marlin fishing tomorrow.

I Wemember Wum. Nobody told me about the shark convention until after I went in swimming at the beach off the docks from the Dockmaster's building. The sight of snakes prompts the same response. Ask the Boss if there is any BREAKFAST left on the island.
