During our trip from Florida to St Thomas, we had the wind and sea on the bow of the boat the entire time. With the exception of a few calm days we pounded ourselves the entire way. The trip home is such a pleasure. We have had following seas the entire way. Well... With the exception of yesterday.
We departed Puerto Plata Dominican Republic Wednesday morning and the seas were calm. After the first 20 miles, I was thinking that it was going to be a calm ride. But the skies darkened and the winds increased. The rains came hard and side ways. Only two nights before we had watched the movie Captain Ron for the 24th time. I was reminded of one of the lines Capt Ron used. " Its OK Boss... These storms come on ya fast and they leaves ya fast." The storms did not leave us fast. They seemed to blossom as we tracked to the north. Then the lightening came. It was popping all around us. I was alone on the bridge and started humming the Gilligans island song to my self. " the weather started getting rough... the tiny ship was tossed... if not for the fearless crew the minnow would be lost" . The last squall that we drove through, had big lightening in it. At one point all my hair started raising up. But then the winds backed off and the rain stopped as quick as it started. At that point, we were approaching the Mouchoir bank. We had fished there on the trip south and had good luck. We trolled for a while and caught a few dorado and hooked one marlin but it spit the hook after a short fight. We trolled a short ways further and had no luck. The squalls that we had run passed and through all morning we gaining on us quickly. It is truly amazing how quickly the wind can come up and turn on you. The air turned ice cold as I told Kyle to reel the lines in. The wind line hit us with 35-40 mile an hour winds We hauled ass the rest of the way to Grand Turk. We anchored down behind the island for the night.
Today I woke up Kyle at 5 am ( he was not happy) but we wanted to run to East Caicos to be on the point there when the sun rose. It was to no avail. We trolled for 70 miles today and never saw a marlin. We did catch a Yellow fin Tuna and a few Dorado, but I am shocked to have not seen a billfish.
We have two guests flying in tonight and we are departing in the morning to head for San Salvador Bahamas. We will probably anchor out tomorrow night. Hopefully by the time we get to San Sal, we will have some great fish stories and pics to go along with it.
