sloppy day at sea |
We departed Ocean Reef Key Largo at about 10 am this morning. The winds were suppose to be 15 kts or less. The seas were to be 3 foot. At 10 :30 we got to the edge of the reef and the seas were already 3-4. Dead ahead on our heading to bimini was an ominous small lump of showers. After a half an hour that lump grew into a crap load. The seas never really got over 5 foot but they were steep and choppy. We had the Wahoo gear out so we just went 8-9 kts the entire way. We never got a bite. The best part of the trip was the first 4 miles and the last two miles. As we arrived around four pm, a number of other boats also came limping in. The bar tonight at the Big game club was full of war stories about the crossing that were made today. Some came from Miami some from Ft Lauderdale and one even came from Jupiter. Everyone got their ass's handed to them. We were one of the larger boats. The smallest was a 31 foot center console boat. That guy was really mad at how bad the forecast was off. Everyone was very surprised by how big the thunderstorms got and how quickly they built.
But we made it here anyway and did not do much damage We did break a coffee cup when a cabinet flew open. I think a piece of it is still in the bottom of my foot.
Bimini is the closest island to the US. Its Hay-day was the years before the 80's. After that as boats grew bigger and faster, Bimini was left behind. Today its main tourism comes from weekend warriors in center console boats. Right now there are few boats here. Its a small island only a few miles long and onle a 1/4 mile wide in most places.
When I arrived I filled out all the paper work and then walked the 1/2 mile down to Immagration and customs. I saw that I was there 20 minutes before closing. I cleared Imigration then walked next door to see that the customs guy had gone home Oh well so much for leaving early tomorrow.

Very corny but the coolest old dead tree |
I did take Kyle for a walk around the island. We went to the End of the World bar and walked around a bit. But after a long day we opted to go back to BBGC and have dinner. While walking around Kyle was nearly run over three different times. He cant seem to figure out the driving on the wrong side of the road thing.

OK yes I love my sunsets |
The word on the dock is that the winds are " suppose " to be light tomorrow. Lets up that is correct. Kyle and I plan to do some spearfishing tomorrow. Or at least stab a few Bugs.
I cant wait to see if kyle is going to help me out by getting the shard of broken coffee cup out of my foot.

I am glad to hear your crossing went well. I look forward to reading about the fishing. Tell Kyle we are sorry to hear of his loss. Tight lines.
