Big girl with 3/4 of a spool out |
Its always cool to put a guest on a personal best. A few days ago, Abel Guerra Fought and released a nice blue marlin. When it first bit, it peeled three quarters of a spool and did not seem to want to stop. At that point she started jumping. We all saw that is was a nice fish and the guesstimating began as to how big she was. most of us guessed around 400lbs. Abel begin getting some line back and the fish went down and dirty on us. While Abel was locked in a stalemate of a battle, Full on beast mode, I heard Steve below as he started reviewing a few of the pics he had snapped during her jumps. He got more excited with each picture he reviewed. He announced that This fish was going to surprise us with her size. He was right. An hour later Abel won the battle and released a fish that was upwards of 700lbs. Abel has caught many Blue marlin over the years while fishing with us on the Blue Heaven, But this one was special. Abel does not get excited about many things, But he sure was excited after that fish.
Another angler we had fishing with us, had fished with us in Casa De Campo Dominican Republic. He had caught some of the smaller blue marlin there. Don't get me wrong. A 130 lb blue marlin can put up a hell of a fight. But Tony had never caught a big one. He got his chance the other day. After an awesome bite with the fish coming half of its body out of the water to crush the bait, Tony locked horns with a nice North drop Blue marlin. Although it was not as big as Abels fish, It was a good size blue.
When traveling in the Caribbean this time of year, You always have to keep a weather eye to the east. With todays websites and access to every weatherman in the world, Its pretty easy to see what is coming your way. Hurricane season began weeks ago but we are just now getting into the prolific part of the season. I have used Buoyweather.com for years and still do. One of my favorites is Spaghettimodels, com It is Mikesweatherpage on Face book. Mike has compiled one of the best sites around for viewing and predicting what weather may come during this tropical season. One other site I have been using is Windyty.com It is a great site for looking at long term weather patterns.
This past weekend we had our first tropical wave pass thru. With its passage we had significant rains and lots of gusty winds. For the past few days we have just played on land. On Saturday, we were down in the British Virgin Islands on Virgin Gorda. We were sitting at Virgin Gorda Yacht harbor in Spanishtown. I walked up to the parking lot and hired a taxi to drive us for the day. This is not a taxi by normal standards. It was a smaller pick up truck with benches on either side in the bed and an awning completely covering the passenger area in the Bed. Our driver was none other than Bill Clinton!!!! He was great. He took us to the top of the highest point on Virgin Gorda where there is a bar called Hog Heaven. The view from there is magnificent. I must say that the Pain Killers Are not a bad drink there either. We were looking to get some lunch and left it to Bill Clinton to take us to a good place for lunch. He brought us to Mermaids dock side bar. It is in between the Baths and the marina at Spanishtown. I Never thought I would say these words but " Bill Clinton know best". The place is on a dock out over the water. The prices were reasonable and the food was over the top good. The pain Killers were good there as well. By the way, Bill Clinton said that you should not vote for Hillary. Just sayin!!!! From there he took us to the other end of the island to go to the Baths. Yes we've been there before but our guests had not. If you do not have a small tender on your boat, going to the Baths by car is a good option.
