heading out of the marina this morning |
I woke up this morning and walked onto the back deck to find that old familiar smell. The winds had subsided which allowed the cool damp air from the Dominican rain forests in the mountains above us to sink down the slopes and intermingle with the sea air. Man do I love mornings on the dock.
Yesterday in contrast, We started our morning and a better part of the day covered in salt spray. We departed Blue Haven Marina in the Turks and headed for the Dominican at first light. The weather forecast held though and as predicted the winds of the last week slacked to near nothing. By the time we approached the mountainous coast line of the Dominican Republic we had only gently rollers.
Today we left out of Ocean World Marina, Puerto Plata DR again at first light. We made our way east along the jagged coastline with its beautiful beaches dotted in between and Marveled at the mountains and rock formations. We stopped and fished a few FADS fish attacking devices along the way but had no luck.
Once we rounded Cabo Cabron on the NE tip of the DR, we spotted a sailing tall ship ahead of us. She was a fully rigged three mast tall ship. The rigging on her was a web of ropes and pulleys. I never miss a chance to do a low level fly by on an old lady like that. The "Soludet" was a majestic sight and had us wondering what it must have been like to sail these waters in years gone by.
Soon after that we started seeing whales here and there. But finally saw a big pod of about 12 of them spouting and tail slapping. In my excitement I erased the pics so your just have to take my word for it. Whales calve in these waters during the next month or so and can be frequently seen when passing through.

Good morning from my office |
We trolled for a better part of the afternoon, we saw nothing. Tyler was sitting next to me on the bridge dozing off when Our flat line came out of the clip. I had been near it trying to snap a pic of T sleeping so we thought I had bumped it. But seconds later the right long lure came out of the clip and peeled quite a bit of line. When Tyler started reeling the fish did not give much of a fight till we pulled it along side. At first glance we thought we had caught a tiny 25 lb blue marlin. But after looking at it closer we think it was a short bill spearfish. A relatively rare catch. It was Tylers first.
We pulled into Can Cana on the Eastern tip of the Dominican late this afternoon. I could have probably made it to our final destination of Casa de Campo a bit further around the coast, but I would rather take it slow and fish a bit tomorrow before heading in. Would love to come in with some release flags on our first day
BOSS WHEN YOU COMING DOWN. SOON PLEASE!!!!
