There's a beautiful view of the end of the world from the pier...... |
Woke at 5 am this morning to a brutal sweat. The power went off and the cabin got warm quickly. I reset the breaker and sat outside for a bit. There is a sweet smoke in the air. The light breeze was carrying from the north a pungent haze. It is the sugar cane fields." I love the smell of fire smoke." They burn the crop field after cutting it to retain the nutrients back into the soil. I was sweaty already so I went for a jog. The sun rose as I made my way through Casa De Campo (CDC). I made my way down nearly every dock and around the village. The marina complex here has an Italian Mediteranian feel to it. The buildings and shops are at the center of the marina with thousands of homes and condos spreading out from there. The terrain here is not dramatic like the north coast. I can see the mountains off in the distance but the coastal plane is low and sloping gently. Its amazing how much further I can jog/ crawl with no mountains.
I returned to the boat and had to write about the view I have from the back deck. Its not just the scenery. I have written before about the magic of a marina coming to life in the morning. It is something everyone should sit back with a cup of coffee and enjoy at least once. There are little Turns ( Small birds ) running up and down the dock searching for scraps from the day before. The sun is warm and bright. The haze is not as bad as it was an hour ago but the sweet smell is still in the air. A lady walked by with her dog and stopped to chat. She is Italian and lives here for a few weeks a year. She noticed My shoes sitting next to me and said we should run together some morning. Oh God. I would never keep up with a young lady like that. ..... Slowly there are a few Dominicans showing up on the dock. The american crews on the Gear up, The Chach and the Due Course have been out on the dock for a while rigging baits. I started my jog down at that end of the dock. I got nothing but grief. They are all going fishing and I am sitting here. The boss calls this " captain torture". Referring to the marlin bite happening and The captain being stuck at the dock. LOL The golf carts with fishing guests are starting to roll by now. Each day brings new excitement. You can feel the energy as they roll down the dock headed for a new day on the water. Boats are starting to fire up their motors now. There are a few older Dominican boat, that are pretty smoky in the morning before they warm up. Believe it or not, I actually like the smell of cold diesels in the morning. One by one the boats are casting their lines off and motoring out to ply the waters. The Besty was the last to leave. She is a brand new 87' Spencer. She is the last to leave but will probably be the first out to the fishing area. man what a pretty boat. It does not mater if it is two days , two weeks, or two months that go by where you dont fish, It always hurts just a bit when you sit at the dock as the rest of the fleet leaves.
The fishing has been good. I heard about the bite being good a few weeks ago. The boats here have been doing great on the blue marlin. Most boats are averaging 4-5 Blues a day. One boat caught 17 in three days. Even a slow day was not bad for the gear up yesterday, when they only caught one Blue Marlin. But they jumped off 3 others and sancho one more. I had heard about the bite this time of year before. I tried to get the boat here for the first of the month. The full moon is normally the best bite for Blues. The bite will probably slow till the next full moon at the beginning of next month. But the bite is still going strong.
I had an interesting time yesterday. I had an electrician come to the boat to work on the lights in the salon and the stereo system. My spinglish/spanglish/pig Latin. is not real good. So describing an intricate system like the Audio visual system on the Blue heaven, was like teaching pigs to fly. I would try to explain that one bank of speakers did not work and he would ask something I did not understand. He had the personality of a rusty nail and seemed pretty disgusted with my spanish. I kept asking him to Speak slowly and he only spoke faster. I think it was on purpose. I finally grabbed a spanish/english speaking mate off the dock and got the communications on a level playing field. But the guy was still an ass to deal with. He did know what he was doing though. All the systems are back up and running.
Well the last of the boats have left the dock for the day. I think We are going to do an oil change and fuel filter service on the motors. It will be a hot one, But I want everything done when the boss FINALLY gets back down here. Yes boss that was directed at you. Get your butt down here. The boat is where the fish are. !!!
