It 5 am the docks are quiet. the winds have let up and the is not a cloud in the sky. With no city lights anywhere around to drown out the stars, the sky is aglow with stars. You can clearly see the milky-way again this morning. Quite stunning. There are two Large nurse sharks laying on the bottom in the lights behind the boat and a very large Lemon shark keeps patrolling by.
We are going to leave out of here around 7 this morning. As I said the winds have let up and we "should have a decent ride to San Salvador. I plan to put the lines out as soon as we leave the marina and troll the entire way to San Sal. The boats that did get out yesterday hid behind Cat island and did real good on dorado. There were a few Yellowfin Tuna and one white marlin was caught yesterday. I believe the first 18 miles of our trip will be nice as we work our way around the south tip of cat and off to Columbus point. Then I think the left over swell from the past few days of wind will bump it up a bit. But the forecast is for lighter winds all day and flat for the weekend.
Yesterday afternoon after the boats returned from fishing, All the fish were filleted and then the show began. At most of these out island marinas one of the big things for entertainment is Shark wrangling. There are lots of sharks in the marinas here and around 5 pm even more seem to know it is feeding time. After the fish are filleted, the carcasses are all put in a wheel barrow and taken to the fuel dock. There is where the fun begins. Useing a long piece of rope. We tie a fish carcass to the end. the sharks are schooled up by the dozens below the dock. Shark wrangling involves throwing the carcass into the water and seeing who can pull the shark closest to the dock before the rope is cut or the shark lets go. There were probably 2 dozen shark here yesterday. Some nurse sharks but mostly 4- 5 foot reef sharks. There were 4 or 5 Lemon sharks as well. They are the big ones. I guess the biggest was 9-10 feet. It is very exciting and the sharks are not harmed. Some of the sharks hold on to the head from a while. Everyone one the dock was completely soaked a few times as a 8 foot lemon ( the most aggressive here) came up jumping and thrashing about. I have good pics of this and will share them as soon as I get to a place with good wifi.
Sorry still no pictures. The internet, like everything else here is snail slow. I seem to be able to receive emails, but when I try to send out an email, it kicks me off line. I have been able to get on FB but even that kicks off every ten minutes. I can do the blog, but it takes 30 minutes to send at times. Internet on San sal should be much better. I will probably send a bunch of pics from the last few days in a report when I get to San Sal.
Thanks so much to those of you that have taken the time to write me emails. Receiving one is like Christmas. I love the feed back and enjoy reading from others. We are kinda isolated here and it is so exciting to hear from anyone even if it is a short note. I feel guilt though as some of you have written me and I was able to recieve the email but when I tried to respond the internet hiccups.
Kyle and I are looking forward to fishing today. Hopefully we will have lots of great pics.
