The Mail boat at the government Cockburn town |
Woke up with the sunrise today and decided to go get some exercise. Could not decide whether I wanted to run to Cockburn town or go for a swim/ snorkel. I opted for the snorkel until I walked over the sand dune and saw that there was a 6 foot Lemon shark patrolling the shallows. Cockburn is sounding better all the time. So I put the running shoes on and took to the road. I acctually made it all the way to town with out walking.

The grocery |
As I neared town I saw that the Mail boat had arrived this morning. The Mail boat is really the small island freight boat that comes in every week. Originally the only communication between the out islands was by mail which arrive by the " mail boat". Now a days it is mostly provisions and construction materials that come by mail boat. From experience I figured I would go by the little grocery store. It is normally not open on Sundays. I walked in and it was very busy. When the mail boat comes in, You hit the grocery store right away. If not the fresh produce disappears in a day. Now when I say fresh.... The tomatoes were purchased in Miami then spent a few days being shipped on a freighter to Nassau. Then a few more days to San Sal. The oranges looked good and the Tomatoes were not to bad. I would not feed the lettuce to a goat. The grocery store guy told me to just take what I need and pay him later when I came back by. ( Try that in the states). I then walked back. 6 potatoes, 4 tomatoes, two quarts of milk!!!!! (YES they had MILK) an onion , and 4 tangerines got a bit heavy. But about half way back, A local slowed in his car and asked if I need a ride. So friendly here.

40 and 50 lb wahoo |
Yesterday, Kyle and I went out to go try some deep dropping. Deep dropping is where you use an electric reel and fish in 700 to 1000 feet of water for deep water snappers. The wall on this side of the island is pretty steep and drops to deep to fast so we needed to idle around to the windward side. When we cleared the north tip of the island, We found that there was still a real big swell rolling. No deep dropping. So we put out the Wahoo lures and tried that. I had asked Big John, a local big bahamian dude with dreadlocks to go with us. I am glad he did. We hooked 9 Wahoo an got only two. the action was pretty steady. We did get a 40 and 50 pounder to the boat. But the rest cut us off. Wahoo have razor sharp teeth. We had one hooked that may have pushed 80-100 lbs. But after a blistering run peeling line off the reel it cut us off.
Today we are going to work on our fresh water pump as it is bleeding off pressure. Then I may go for that snorkel if the Lemon shark has gone.
